Are you training well, but not performing in matches?

One of the most significant lessons I've learned in my coaching career is that tennis, like many sports, is fundamentally a scenario-based game. Early on, I used to think tennis was primarily about mastering skills—perfecting your serve, honing your forehand, exploiting your opponent's weaknesses. However, I realised that since we can't control our opponents and their actions, tennis is much more about reacting to different scenarios on the court.

The Influence of Football Training

This understanding truly hit home when I stepped out of the tennis world and started working in a football environment. In football, every session and drill is designed around scenarios that players will face during a game. This approach was a wake-up call for me. I began to see tennis in a new light, recognising that the game is highly situational.

Shifting Focus: From Skills to Scenarios

In tennis, we often find ourselves in various scenarios—whether it's a neutral situation where we can plan our next move, or an offensive position with time and space to execute our shots. The game constantly shifts, and our ability to handle these situations determines our success. It's not just about how well we execute our strokes, but also about our movement, decision-making, shot selection, and positioning.

The Balance Between Skills and Scenarios

I challenge all coaches and players to reflect on their training methods. How much of your practice is focused on skills, and how much is dedicated to scenarios? If you're primarily working on skills in isolation, you may find it challenging to transfer those skills into match play. The key is to blend the two—work on skills within the context of realistic scenarios. This approach ensures that skill execution translates effectively to performance on match day.

Conclusion

Working on scenarios is a critical aspect of playing better matches. By integrating scenario-based training with skill development, we can create more effective and adaptable players. Remember, it's not just about how well you can hit a shot, but how well you can perform under various game situations. So, let's embrace this approach and elevate our game to the next level.

Keep pushing, stay focused, and always be prepared for the scenarios you'll face on the court.
